The new Trois-Rivières Amphitheatre was inaugurated by the city in 2015. civiliti was commissioned to complete the design of the site at the confluence of the Saint-Lawrence and Saint-Maurice rivers. The approach favors an environment in symbiosis with the building’s strong architectural identity, and an immersive public space that supports and stages the river landscape. A new public square and an esplanade overlooking the river landscape create a dialogue between the building and its surroundings. Prioritizing accessibility to the site on foot and by public transport, the project does not include any parking. The vehicular manoeuvring areas and bus landing are blended into the square.
Based on the clean, evocative architectural lines of the amphitheatre, two large obliques cut the site into simple geometric areas and organize the contours of the new landscape. Outdoor bleachers rise up from the lawn to provide a venue for events overlooking the river. A long table is carved into the embankment. At the confluence, a circular space features compass furniture that identifies the world’s great theatres. Set in line with the monumental letters on the front of the amphitheatre, this unique piece of furniture embodies and symbolizes the integration sought between architecture and landscape.
