A significant street of Plateau Mont-Royal, Avenue des Pins crosses and connects the cultural landscapes of the Mont-Royal Heritage Site and La Fontaine Park. Additionally, it is framed by two remarkable institutions, to the west, the Hôtel-Dieu, and to the east, the Institute for Deaf-Mute. Despite this rich context, Avenue des Pins has long had a weak urban environment, heavily dedicated to automobiles.

The project improves the sharing of transportation modes and transforms the street’s perspective with the reduction of the roadway to one lane in each direction and the addition of bike lanes protected by new tree alignments. Along the route, the intersections of cross streets feature vegetated bump-outs with urban lounges, as well as raised thresholds that calm traffic in and out of residential neighborhood.

In support of the heritage value of the Hôtel-Dieu area, distinctive design elements transform the surroundings of the site. Running along the north side of the institution’s stone wall, they include the installation of a double row of trees, a paved section of the sidewalk, and an expanded forecourt marking the axis of the former chapel. Additionally, the developments include a small square at the junction of Jeanne-Mance Street, featuring a public artwork that frames a spectacular view of Mount Royal Park.
