Urban Switching is the winning proposal of the national design competition for the development of the Simon-Valois Shared Space, held in 2017. Place Simon-Valois, co-designed by the civiliti team in 2003, is located on a former industrial and railway site in the extension of Promenade Luc-Larivée. It’s a lively public space that’s part of the borough’s identity, in an area that has undergone major redevelopment since the turn of the millennium.
civiliti has seized on the concept of the shared space to extend the existing public square as far as possible onto the streets that border it, formalizing an area dedicated to urban movement with a predominantly pedestrian feel: a flexible, convivial, green and safe place offering support for animation and event programming as well as everyday use. Working from the original analogy of the Place Simon-Valois, furniture, lighting, materials and an aerial public terrace – the signal tower – consecrate the site as a celebration of modes of mobility that intersect like a railway choreography.
