Place Monique-Mercure is a new urban square along the western facade of the Outremont theater on Bernard Avenue. The design presented here responds to the borough’s placemaking vision for Bernard Avenue, an urban oasis, and a meeting place for all, while celebrating the Outremont theater as a major architectural landmark.
Drawing inspiration from the art deco architecture of the heritage theatre, the design features a continuous line pattern that winds through the space, forming a sequence of three-dimensional modules. Together, the modules offer different types of furniture and modes of appropriation for the public, whether for relaxation, meetings or even small spontaneous or scheduled theatrical events. This three-dimensional decorative line is the signature of Place Monique-Mercure, a unique place to celebrate the public and cultural life of the borough.
