As part of the Bassins du Nouveau-Havre development, Bassin-à-Gravier Park is a project to revitalize and enhance the former Shipping Basin no. 3 on the banks of the Lachine Canal, extending 200 meters to Ottawa Street. Bassin-à-Gravier Park corresponds to the section north of rue des Bassins. Together with the bioretention basin to the south, the ensemble is defined by pedestrian walkways and wide limestone slabs directly above the traces of the historic basin. Site levelling and an atmospheric steel wall allow the contour walls to emerge, tangibly evoking the heritage traces.
The park is designed for Griffintown families. The design draws its inspiration from the historic barges that docked at the basin. Composed of prefabricated concrete segments, a large barge frames the play areas and shapes the playful imagination. Play areas also feature evocative furniture and equipment. Three small barges, including one for the sandbox, are distributed across the large lawn. This area is ideal for free play. Along Ottawa Street, a splash pad offers refreshing summer fun. The spaces are designed to create a versatile and sustainable venue, rooted in Griffintown’s industrial heritage.
